My Life Story (Part 2): The "Middle Ages"

  • New Jersey, Jersey Shore
  • Rahway, Catholic School, Friends
  • Westfield, Public School, No Friends
  • Quiet Asian Kid, Reject
  • Sleepy, End of Post

Guess that thoroughly summed up the previous post right?  (lol, not really xP)

Middle school at Roosevelt wasn't the best of times in my life.  But I don't think it was THAT bad either during the time.  It's just looking back on it, it's easier to notice all the problems that existed.  So I mentioned in my previous post how I attended a Chinese School, which was called Union Chinese School.  This, I guess, served as my happy/"getaway" place where everything was fun and there were no problems.
Union Chinese School (At Edison Intermediate)

Ironically, my Chinese School took place at Thomas Alva Edison Intermediate School in Westfield, which just happens to be the other public middle school of Westfield.  Roosevelt was known as the "North Side" while Edison was commonly referred to as the "South Side."  Here, I was surrounded with countless amounts of Chinese kids where I was able to be myself.  Of course being Asian and all I just so happened to be the top of my class as well (but wait, everyone was Asian!  Guess that meant I was even better xD)  Haha, but really, my ego isn't THAT big xP

Having this Chinese School surely helped me along in my years in Westfield.  That and the fact I was a pretty good athlete and excelled when it came to anything competitive in nature.  With exception to geography bees.  History and English were not my forte (guess that stereotype is true? :P)  I stopped playing basketball for the school team after 6th grade, but continued to play in the town recreation leagues for basketball and baseball until 9th grade, both of which I was one of the top players in.  These extracurricular activities allowed me to relax and let my mind wander away from the so called "difficulties of life."

Westfield Senior High School

Then with a blink of an eye, High School came along.  Westfield has one public high school, so both the kids from the south side (Edison) and north side (Roosevelt) consolidated in our Westfield Senior High School.  It was here where I made a new group of friends and "upgraded" from "reject" to "geek."  Geek, you ask?  Weren't you already one before?  Well, the type of geek I'm referring to is a choir geek.  Yes people, this quiet azn kid here was actually a choir geek LOL.

During my sophomore year, I was one of 8 sophomores to make it into the school's Concert Choir, which consisted of 100 something singers.  My junior year, I was one of the 4 juniors to make it into the school's Chorale/Choraleers Choir, which consisted of 25 singers (the rest were Seniors).  In fact, being in this choir also meant I would have had 2 periods of chorus in my 9 period day, since it was required to take Concert Choir along with Chorale/Choraleers.  Too much choir talk for you right?  Don't worry, I'm almost done (not really.)

Carnegie Hall :)

I'll be the first one to admit, I spent WAY too much time with choir related activities in my high school days.  I also participated in the NJ Regional Choir my Junior and Senior years, and I also made it to the NJ All-State Choir for the session that was my Junior-Senior year.  For the organization my Chinese School was under, there was a music program as well, called the Chinese American Music Ensemble, which practiced on Saturday afternoons which I was a part of as well.  These choirs gave me chances to perform in places such as NJPAC and at Atlantic City.  I also had the opportunity to participate in a festival choir event which included selected choirs from all over the US.  For that performance, I have the chance to experience singing on stage at Carnegie Hall :D  Yup, THE Carnegie Hall.  You jealous? xP

Chorus related activities were really fun and entertaining for me.  The had many extraordinary experiences I will relish for a long time, but choir life is something I would probably not want to go back to again.  It's one of those "once in a lifetime" things for me.  Since I ended the previous post on a sad memory, I'll end this one on a happy one xD

Thanks for stopping by, and I will continue "My Life Story" another time.  :P ace
